eSIM not working? Check these things before you buy a new one
You've installed your eSIM, but there's no internet? Your phone shows "No Service", or mobile data just won't connect?
This can be stressful, especially when you've just landed somewhere new. The good news: in most cases the problem isn't the eSIM itself. Usually a few simple settings are all you need to check.
Before you rush out and buy a new eSIM, we'd recommend working through the steps below.
Most problems come down to these three causes
1. Data Roaming is turned off
Most travel eSIMs need Data Roaming switched on to work at all.
Even with this option enabled, you won't be charged any extra roaming fees. This is simply how an eSIM connects to a foreign network in the first place.
Just make sure Data Roaming is turned on for the eSIM line specifically.
2. The eSIM isn't selected for mobile data
If your phone has two lines, mobile internet might still be trying to run through your main SIM card.
Check your settings to confirm that your eSIM line is the one chosen for Mobile Data.
3. You haven't arrived in the destination country yet
Many travel eSIM plans only activate once you've arrived in the destination country and your phone connects to a local carrier's network.
That's why it's completely normal for your eSIM not to work when you are:
- still on the plane,
- not yet landed at the airport,
- or still in your home country.
Still no internet?
If you've already checked everything above, try these next.
Toggle Airplane Mode on and off
Turn Airplane Mode on for about 10 seconds, then turn it back off.
This forces your phone to search for mobile networks again, and it fixes the problem more often than you'd think.
Restart your phone
It sounds obvious, but it's one of the most effective fixes for network issues.
Select the carrier manually
Go to Settings → Mobile Network.
- Turn off automatic network selection.
- Pick one of the available local carriers from the list.
- If it won't connect, try the other carriers too.
Check your APN settings
In most cases, the APN is configured automatically.
If LimitSim has sent you specific APN details, enter them into your mobile data settings exactly as provided.
