eSIM Chiang Mai: Coverage, Plans and Setup in Northern Thailand (2026)

Chiang Mai draws travellers to the Old City's temples, Nimmanhaemin's cafés and day trips to Doi Suthep and Doi Inthanon, often with a side trip to Chiang Rai or Pai. Maps, Grab or Bolt rides, translation, bookings and messages home all need mobile data.

Does an eSIM work in Chiang Mai?

Yes. A Thailand eSIM works in Chiang Mai as in the rest of the country, as long as your phone supports eSIM and isn't locked to a carrier.

Mobile coverage in Chiang Mai and northern Thailand

True Corporation, which runs TrueMove H and dtac, lists Chiang Mai among the destinations its network covers (December 2025). Outside the city, signal is often weaker on mountain roads and in national parks.

Nationwide, AIS reported 5G population coverage above 95% in its 2025 results (February 2026), and True reported 94% for 5G and 99% for 4G (December 2025). On 27 August 2025, True announced a 5G upgrade to the full 90 MHz bandwidth at Nimmanhaemin and Chiang Mai Airport. For a week, 5 GB valid for 30 days is a sensible start; take more data for longer stays or heavy use, or top up later.

• A weekend: 1 GB / 7 days (€1.25).
• One week: 5 GB / 30 days (€4.83); for heavy use, Unlimited / 7 days (€12.70) or 50 GB / 10 days (€14.29).

Unlimited plans have a fair-usage policy, so speed is reduced in steps as you use data: full speed for the first 500 MB, then up to 5 Mbps, and up to 512 kbps after 25, 40 or 65 GB (7, 15 or 30 days), with a total cap of 30, 45 or 70 GB. Details are on each plan.

How to install and activate your eSIM

Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi before you fly, then switch your mobile data to it after landing. Each plan's details show when its validity starts.

1. Buy your plan. The eSIM arrives by email and in your LimitSim account and app, as a QR code plus manual codes.
2. Install it on Wi-Fi on the phone you'll travel with, using our iPhone or Android guide.
3. Don't delete it. Some eSIMs can't be installed a second time.
4. After landing, turn on the eSIM line, choose it for mobile data and switch on its data roaming, which a travel eSIM usually needs.
5. Keep data roaming off on your home SIM. It can still take calls and texts, which may cost roaming fees.

Before you fly to Chiang Mai

Fill in Thailand's digital arrival card and check how long you can stay without a visa.

• TDAC: since 1 May 2025, every foreign visitor must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card online within the three days before arrival. It's free on the official site, tdac.immigration.go.th; sites that charge a fee aren't official.
• Visa-free stay: since 15 September 2026, tourists of many nationalities can stay up to 30 days without a visa, less than before. Check the current rules for your passport before you travel.
• Local SIM cards: the Tourism Authority of Thailand says they're readily available in Chiang Mai, but buying one involves an identity check with your passport.

After landing, all that's left is switching your mobile data to the eSIM.

Which network will my phone use in Chiang Mai?

It depends on the plan: unlimited plans use AIS and dtac, and most fixed-data plans TrueMove H and dtac. Which network your phone uses at a given moment can vary.

How much data do I need for a week?

For maps, messaging, rides and some social media, 3 to 5 GB is a sensible start. For streaming or daily video calls, choose 10 GB or more, or an unlimited plan.

Can I keep my WhatsApp number?

Yes. Your home SIM stays in the phone, so WhatsApp keeps your usual number while it uses the eSIM's data.

Can I top up if I run out of data?

Yes, on most plans, in the LimitSim app or on the website when you're signed in. The 50 GB / 10 days plan can't be topped up.

Is there signal on Doi Suthep and in the mountains?

It varies. Coverage is often weaker on mountain roads and in national parks than in the city, so download offline maps before day trips.
