eSIM Bangkok & Phuket: Coverage, Islands and Plans (2026)

· 7 min read · LimitSİM Team

If you searched for "eSIM Bangkok", here's the short answer: you don't need a separate eSIM for the city, because one Thailand eSIM works across the country, wherever its networks have signal. Install it before you fly, switch it on when you land and keep your own SIM in the phone for calls and texts. Below we go stop by stop, from Bangkok and Phuket to Koh Samui, Phi Phi, Krabi and Chiang Mai: what coverage to expect, where it gets weaker and which plan fits.

Which networks does a Thailand eSIM use?

A Thailand eSIM uses local mobile networks, so its coverage is theirs. LimitSim's Thailand plans connect to AIS, dtac or TrueMove H, depending on the plan; the networks for each plan are listed on the plans page.

Thailand's two big mobile operators are AIS and True Corporation. True runs two brands, TrueMove H and dtac, which have shared one combined network since 2025. AIS reports 5G population coverage above 95%, and True reports 94% for 5G and 99% for 4G (the operators' own 2025 figures).

These figures describe the networks, not a particular plan or phone, and they don't mean signal on every beach. For the basics, see our complete Thailand eSIM guide.

eSIM Bangkok: getting online at the airport and in the city

Bangkok is well covered with 4G, and 5G is available in many central areas, so the main thing to plan is getting online when you land at Suvarnabhumi (BKK) or Don Mueang (DMK). A travel eSIM is bought online and installed by scanning a QR code, so there's no SIM counter to visit at the airport.

LimitSim sends the eSIM by email and to your account after payment, as a QR code plus manual codes. Install it once, at home, on the phone you'll travel with, and don't delete it afterwards: some eSIMs can't be installed a second time.

After landing:

  1. Set the Thailand eSIM as your mobile-data line.
  2. Turn on data roaming for the eSIM line. Until you do, the eSIM looks installed but has no internet.
  3. Switch off data roaming on your home SIM. It still takes calls and texts, but your home operator may charge roaming fees for them.

Our iPhone and Android setup guide shows where these settings are.

Only in Bangkok for a day or a stopover? The 1-day plan includes 2 GB (€2.86); after that, speed drops to 512 kbps.

eSIM Phuket: the airport, the island and the boats

Phuket is also well covered with 4G, but on boat trips the signal can be weak or absent once you're out at sea.

Set the eSIM up before you fly and switch it on when you land at Phuket airport (HKT). Heading on to Phi Phi or Krabi by boat? Save your tickets, offline maps and hotel address before you board.

Koh Samui, Phi Phi and Krabi: eSIM coverage on the islands

Koh Samui and Krabi are well covered with 4G. Expect weaker or no signal out at sea between islands and on small, remote islands.

True lists Krabi and Surat Thani, the province of Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, among the destinations its combined network covers (December 2025), and in August 2026 it announced 5G along the ferry route to Koh Phangan. AIS announced coverage of coastal areas, islands and sea routes on the Gulf and Andaman coasts in November 2024. These are the operators' own announcements, not independent tests. For Phi Phi and the smaller islands, see our guide to Phuket, the islands and the ferries.

eSIM in Chiang Mai and the north

Chiang Mai is well covered with 4G. Away from the city, expect weaker or no signal in remote mountain areas and national parks, so download offline maps before a trek.

True lists Chiang Mai among the destinations its combined network covers (December 2025) and announced a 5G upgrade for the Nimmanhaemin area and Chiang Mai Airport in August 2025. More on the city in our Chiang Mai eSIM guide.

Which Thailand eSIM plan fits your route?

Choose by data and days, not by city: there's no separate Bangkok eSIM or Phuket eSIM, because all 16 LimitSim Thailand plans are country plans.

  • One or two weeks of maps, messaging and ride-hailing: a smaller plan such as 3 GB / 15 days or 5 GB / 30 days. If you run low, most plans can be topped up in the LimitSim app or on the website.
  • Three or four weeks across the country: the 10 GB or 20 GB 30-day plan, or Unlimited / 30 days (fair use); our guide to 30-day and unlimited Thailand eSIMs compares them.
  • Lots of video: an unlimited plan, or a large fixed-data one such as 50 GB / 10 days or 30 GB / 30 days. Unlimited plans come with a fair-usage policy: speed is reduced in steps as you use data (details on each plan).

Prices are in euros; you pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, and if your card isn't in euros, your bank converts at its own rate. As a rough guide, €10 was about A$16.10 or US$11.20 at the ECB reference rates of 5 October 2026.

FAQ

Do I need a separate eSIM for Bangkok and Phuket?

No. LimitSim's Thailand plans are country plans, so one eSIM works in Bangkok, Phuket, on the islands and in Chiang Mai, wherever its networks have signal. You only choose the data and the number of days.

Can I set up the eSIM before I land in Bangkok or Phuket?

Yes, and it's the easiest way. Install it at home over Wi-Fi; after landing at Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang or Phuket airport, set it as your mobile-data line and turn on data roaming for it. Each plan's details show when its validity period starts.

Will I have signal on the ferries to Phi Phi or Koh Samui?

Not necessarily all the way. Both big operators have been extending coverage along island ferry routes, but out at sea the signal can still be weak or drop out. Download maps and save your tickets before you board.

Do I get a Thai phone number with the eSIM?

No. LimitSim's Thailand plans are data-only: no Thai number, no calls or SMS. Your own SIM and number keep working, and WhatsApp, FaceTime and other app calls work over data.

Does the eSIM use AIS in Bangkok and Phuket?

It depends on the plan, not the city. The unlimited plans and the 15 GB and 30 GB plans list AIS and dtac, and the 1 GB, 10 GB and 20 GB plans can also run on AIS and dtac. Which network your phone joins at a given moment isn't guaranteed.
