How to Buy an eSIM Online: Step-by-Step Guide for Travelers

· 9 min read · LimitSİM Team

You no longer need to hunt for a SIM card at the airport or rely on your carrier's roaming plan: you can buy an eSIM online from home in a few minutes. But "eSIM" can mean two things: your carrier moves your own number from a physical SIM to an eSIM, while for data abroad you buy a data-only travel eSIM online and add it as a second line, keeping your own number.

This guide shows how to buy an eSIM online in four steps, compares a carrier eSIM with an online eSIM, and sets out prices we checked on 7 October 2026.

How to Buy an eSIM Online in 4 Steps

To buy an eSIM online, follow four steps: check that your phone supports eSIM and isn't carrier-locked, choose a plan for your destination country or region, pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, then scan the QR code from your email over Wi-Fi to install it.

  1. Check your phone. It must support eSIM and not be locked to a carrier; see below.
  2. Choose your plan. Pick a country, regional or global plan for your route, with the data and days you need.
  3. Pay. By card, Apple Pay or Google Pay; prices are in euros.
  4. Install the eSIM. After payment, the QR code, SM-DP+ address and activation code arrive by email and in your LimitSim account and app. Install it once, before you leave, over Wi-Fi, on the phone you'll travel with.

When you land, turn on the eSIM line and its data roaming, and choose it for mobile data. Our eSIM QR code guide explains where to find the code and what to do if a scan fails.

Does Your Phone Support eSIM?

Check this first: an eSIM can't be installed on a phone without eSIM support. Most recent iPhone, Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel models have it, but the same model can differ by the country where it was sold. A one-minute check:

  • iPhone: go to Settings > General > About. If you see an EID number, your phone supports eSIM, and Carrier Lock on the same screen should say "No SIM restrictions".
  • Android: dial *#06#. If an EID appears next to the IMEI, the phone has an eSIM; an "Add eSIM" option in the SIM menu is another good sign.
  • Carrier lock: a phone bought through a carrier or on a contract may only accept that carrier's lines, so ask your carrier to unlock it well before your trip.

For model-by-model details, see our list of eSIM compatible phones.

What You Need to Install an eSIM

Whichever eSIM you buy, installation works the same way: a digital line profile downloads to your phone. Have these ready:

  • an unlocked phone that supports eSIM,
  • stable Wi-Fi (the profile downloads over the internet),
  • an email address for your eSIM details,
  • a second screen to show the QR code, or the SM-DP+ address and activation code for manual setup.

You either scan the QR code on your phone's Add eSIM screen or type in the two codes by hand. A phone's camera can't read a QR code on its own screen, so with only one device, choose manual entry. Don't delete the eSIM once it's installed; some eSIMs can't be installed a second time. For the iPhone and Android screens step by step, see how to activate eSIM.

Choosing the Right eSIM Plan for Your Trip

When you buy an eSIM for travel, choosing the plan needs the most thought. Look at coverage, data amount and validity.

  • Country plan: for a single country, it usually costs less per GB than a regional plan. For example, 10 GB for 30 days costs €7.63 on the Germany plan and €9.84 on the Europe plan.
  • Regional plan: for several countries on one trip, one eSIM is enough. LimitSim's Europe plan covers 33 countries and starts from €0.82.
  • Global plan: for routes across more than one continent. It works in 118 countries and areas but costs noticeably more for the same data: 10 GB for 30 days is €60.62.

Maps, messaging and email use little data; video, social media and video calls use far more. A few GB often covers a short city break, and if you're unsure, start mid-size, because most plans can be topped up later. Unlimited plans exist too, such as 7 days of unlimited data in Europe for €17.64, with a fair-usage policy: after a set amount of use, the speed is reduced in steps, as detailed on each plan's page.

Carrier or Online? Your Options to Buy an eSIM

There are two ways to buy an eSIM, and the right one depends on your goal: to move your own number to an eSIM, you go to your carrier; for mobile data abroad, you buy an online eSIM for travel from a site like LimitSim. They don't replace each other and can run side by side on one phone.

A carrier eSIM keeps your number and only changes the form your line takes in the phone, so your carrier's roaming terms still apply abroad. Only your carrier can say what the switch costs and requires.

A travel eSIM leaves your current line untouched: your number stays on for calls and texts, data comes from the travel eSIM, and WhatsApp and FaceTime calls run over that data. Calls and texts on your own number cost your carrier's international rates, so keep data roaming off on your home line.

Why Buy an eSIM Online?

For a trip abroad, an online eSIM has practical benefits:

  • No store visit. You choose and pay at home; the eSIM details arrive by email and in your account.
  • A known price. You buy a prepaid plan, with no contract or commitment.
  • Ready on arrival. Install at home, then turn on the line and its data roaming when you land.
  • Top-ups. Most plans can be topped up in the app or on the website when you're signed in.
  • Several countries, one eSIM. With a regional plan, you don't need a new line at every border.

eSIM Price Comparison

Price matters when you buy an eSIM online, and a fair comparison uses the same data, validity and currency. The table puts LimitSim's and Airalo's euro list prices side by side on that basis: data-only plans on both sides, no discount codes, checked on 7 October 2026 on limitsim.com and airalo.com.

Europe (33 countries)3 GB / 7 days€3.46€10.50€7.04 (67.0%) lower
Europe (33 countries)5 GB / 15 days€5.48€17.50€12.02 (68.7%) lower

Georgia5 GB / 30 days€6.81€15.50€8.69 (56.1%) lower

Three things to keep in mind:

  • Europe coverage differs. LimitSim's Europe plan covers 33 countries and Airalo Eurolink 41. Georgia, for example, is in Eurolink but not in LimitSim's Europe plan, while the UK and Switzerland are in both.
  • Same days, not necessarily the same start rule. On both sides, check the plan details for when validity starts.
  • Unlimited plans aren't included. Their fair-usage limits differ, so they can't be compared one to one. Prices can change; current prices are on the plans pages.

FAQ: Buying an eSIM Online

In short: to buy an eSIM online, you need an unlocked phone that supports eSIM, an email address and a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. You install the eSIM over Wi-Fi after payment, then turn on the line and its data roaming in the country you're visiting.

How soon does an eSIM work after you buy it?

After payment, the QR code, SM-DP+ address and activation code are sent to your email and LimitSim account, and installing over Wi-Fi usually takes a few minutes. The eSIM connects to a local network once you turn on the line and its data roaming at your destination; when validity starts is in each plan's details. If the email doesn't arrive, check your spam folder, then contact LimitSim support.

Do I need to show ID to buy an eSIM?

If you're moving your own number to an eSIM, your carrier decides which documents and verification steps it asks for. To buy a travel eSIM from LimitSim, you enter your email address or sign in, then pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Some countries have their own rules for foreign lines and phones, so check your destination's current rules with official sources before you travel.

Can I move an eSIM to another phone?

Install the travel eSIM once, on the phone you'll travel with, and don't delete it: an eSIM profile works on one phone at a time, and some can't be installed twice. Switching phones? Contact LimitSim support before deleting anything. For the eSIM that carries your own number, your carrier sets the terms.

What payment methods can I use?

Card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Prices are shown in euros (EUR); if your card is in another currency, such as US dollars, your bank converts the amount, so your statement can differ slightly with its exchange rate. Once your phone is compatible and you've picked a plan, you can buy an eSIM online and install it in a few minutes before you leave.
