How to Activate eSIM: Step-by-Step Setup Guide for iPhone & Android

· 11 min read · LimitSİM Team

Knowing how to activate eSIM before you fly means you land with data instead of hunting for airport Wi-Fi. The job takes a few minutes: you download a digital SIM profile by scanning a QR code (or typing two codes), then switch the line on when you arrive. This guide shows how to set up eSIM on iPhone and Android, what to do before and after your flight, and how to fix common eSIM activation errors.

Before you start, have three things ready:

  • An eSIM-compatible, unlocked phone. The one-minute check is further down.
  • Stable Wi-Fi. The profile downloads over the internet, so set it up at home or in your hotel.
  • Your eSIM details. LimitSim emails the QR code, SM-DP+ address and activation code after payment; they're also in your LimitSim account and app.

No plan yet? Pick one first; the eSIM setup below is the same for every destination.

How to Activate eSIM on Your Phone (in Under 5 Minutes)

To activate eSIM on your phone, open Settings, tap Add eSIM, scan the QR code LimitSim emails you (or type in the SM-DP+ address and activation code), label the new line, choose it for mobile data, and switch on its data roaming once you land.

Installing and activating are separate moments. Installing downloads the profile onto your phone, and you can do it days ahead. The eSIM activation itself means switching that line on so it connects to a network at your destination. When a plan's validity period begins is listed in its plan details, so check that before installing early. Seen this way, learning how to activate eSIM is mostly about getting the install done at home.

The short version of how to activate eSIM, for any phone:

  1. Connect to Wi-Fi and check that the phone supports eSIM and isn't carrier-locked.
  2. Open your eSIM details from the email or your LimitSim account.
  3. Add the eSIM in Settings by scanning the QR code or entering the details manually.
  4. Label the line (say, "Travel"), keep your home SIM for calls and texts, and choose the eSIM for mobile data.
  5. When you arrive, turn on the eSIM line and its data roaming.

On decent Wi-Fi, the download usually finishes within a minute or two.

How to Set Up eSIM on iPhone

Every iPhone from the XS and XR onward supports eSIM, including the iPhone SE (2nd generation) and later, as long as it isn't carrier-locked. Here is how to set up eSIM on iPhone:

  1. Open Settings > Cellular (shown as Mobile Service or Mobile Data on some iPhones).
  2. Tap Add eSIM.
  3. Tap Use QR Code and point the camera at the code on another screen or a printout.
  4. Tap Continue and wait while the profile downloads.
  5. Give the new line a label, such as "Travel".
  6. Keep your home line for calls, iMessage and FaceTime, and choose the travel eSIM for Cellular Data.
  7. Turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching, so the phone doesn't fall back to your home SIM's roaming data when the signal dips.

That covers how to activate eSIM on iPhone, apart from the data roaming switch you flip on arrival. For more detail on each screen, see our guide on how to install eSIM on iPhone.

Activating eSIM with a QR Code vs. Manual Entry

You only need one of two routes to add the same eSIM profile:

QR codeManual entry
What you needThe QR code on a second screen or on paperThe SM-DP+ address and activation code
Best whenYou set up at home with a laptop or tablet nearbyYou only have one device, or the QR code won't scan

Scanning is the quickest route if you're learning how to set up eSIM for the first time, but a phone's camera can't read a code shown on its own screen. If the QR code is only on the phone you're setting up, choose Enter Details Manually on iPhone (Enter activation code or Enter it manually on Android) and copy both codes exactly as written. Either way, add the eSIM once and leave it installed: some eSIMs can't be installed a second time.

How to Install eSIM on Android (Samsung & Google Pixel)

On Android, the flow matches the iPhone one, but menu names differ by brand; if you can't find the right screen, search Settings for "eSIM". Here's how to install eSIM on the two most common Android families.

Samsung Galaxy

  1. Open Settings > Connections > SIM manager.
  2. Tap Add eSIM, then Scan QR code from service provider. No QR code handy? Tap Enter activation code instead.
  3. Confirm the download and give the line a name.
  4. Back in SIM manager, set Mobile data to the travel eSIM and keep calls and texts on your home SIM.

Compatible Galaxy models and troubleshooting tips are in our walkthrough on how to install eSIM on Samsung Galaxy phones.

Google Pixel

  1. Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs.
  2. Tap Add SIM; if the phone asks, choose Download a SIM instead.
  3. Scan the QR code, or tap Need help? > Enter it manually to type the details.
  4. Download the profile, turn the new eSIM on and choose it for Mobile data.

Other Android brands with eSIM support use the same pattern under Network, Connections or SIM cards. Our Android eSIM installation guide explains how to set up an eSIM on most Android phones. After that, how to activate eSIM on Android comes down to the same two switches as on iPhone: the line itself and its data roaming.

Still choosing where you're going? Pick the destination first. Whatever you choose, how to activate eSIM stays the same: install at home, switch on when you land.

eSIM Activation Before and After Your Trip

eSIM activation works best in two stages: install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi a day or two before you leave, keep the new line switched off until you arrive, then turn the line and its data roaming on after landing so the phone can join a local network.

Timing is the part of how to activate eSIM that trips most people up.

Before you leave

  • Install the eSIM on the phone you'll travel with, not on a spare you'll leave at home.
  • Finish the eSIM setup over Wi-Fi a day or two before departure, so a slow connection or a typo has time to be fixed.
  • Check the plan details for when the validity period starts; it varies by plan.
  • Keep the line switched off after installing, and leave the profile on the phone. Don't delete it to "tidy up".
  • Keep the codes off the phone too: they stay in your email and your LimitSim account.

When you land

Once you land, you activate eSIM data in a few taps:

  1. Turn off Airplane Mode and switch the eSIM line on.
  2. Check that the travel eSIM is selected for mobile data.
  3. Turn on data roaming for the eSIM line only (iPhone: Settings > Cellular > your eSIM > Data Roaming; Android: the roaming switch in that eSIM's settings). A travel eSIM usually works as a roaming line, so with roaming off it won't get online.
  4. Turn data roaming off on your home SIM. Your home carrier may still charge roaming rates for calls and texts on that line.
  5. Give the phone a minute or two to register. Each plan lists its networks on the plans page; if the phone doesn't connect on its own, pick one of them manually in network settings.

During and after the trip

Check your remaining data in the LimitSim app or account. Most plans can be topped up in the app or on the website when you're signed in, so you add data to the same eSIM. Back home, switch the eSIM line off and make your home SIM the data line again.

eSIM Activation Not Working? Common Problems and Fixes

Most eSIM activation problems come down to a setting, not a faulty eSIM. If you followed every step of how to activate eSIM and still have no data, match the symptom to the fix:

  • No "Add eSIM" option: the phone may not support eSIM or may be carrier-locked. Run the check below.
  • "Cellular plan cannot be added" or "This code is no longer valid": the download was interrupted, or the code was already used. Switch to stable Wi-Fi and try once more. Some codes work only once, so if yours was used, contact LimitSim support before buying a new plan.
  • Installed, but no internet: turn on data roaming for the eSIM line, check it's chosen for mobile data, then toggle Airplane Mode.
  • "No Service" after landing: wait a few minutes, restart, or pick one of your plan's listed networks manually.
  • Still nothing: enter APN settings only if your plan details list them; otherwise send LimitSim support your order number, phone model and a screenshot.

One "fix" to skip: deleting the eSIM and scanning again. Some eSIMs can't be installed a second time, and Apple's support pages advise against erasing an eSIM as a troubleshooting step unless your carrier tells you to. If it has already happened, read what to do after deleting an eSIM profile before buying a replacement. For a longer checklist, see our eSIM not working guide.

How to Check If Your Phone Supports eSIM

Before you work out how to activate eSIM, take a minute to confirm your phone can hold one:

  • iPhone: open Settings > General > About. An EID number means eSIM support, and Carrier Lock should say "No SIM restrictions".
  • Android: dial *#06#. If an EID appears next to the IMEI, the phone has an eSIM. An Add eSIM option in the SIM menu is another sign.
  • Regional versions: the same model can differ by market; many iPhones sold in mainland China, for example, have no eSIM.
  • Carrier lock: a phone bought on contract may only accept its own carrier's eSIMs, so ask your carrier to unlock it well before the trip.

Model-by-model details are in our eSIM compatible phones guide.

Going to Europe? Knowing how to activate eSIM once is enough for a multi-country trip: the Europe plan covers 33 countries on one eSIM, so you install once instead of at every border. Europe plans start from €0.82 and Global plans from €7.93 (prices on limitsim.com on 7 October 2026; current prices are on the plans page).

eSIM Setup FAQ

The short answer to most eSIM setup questions: install the plan once, over Wi-Fi, on the phone you'll travel with, keep the profile instead of deleting it, and turn on the eSIM line and its data roaming when you reach your destination.

How do I activate my eSIM?

Open your phone's settings, choose Add eSIM and scan the QR code from your LimitSim email, or enter the SM-DP+ address and activation code by hand. Then label the line and choose it for mobile data. When you land, switch the line on and turn on its data roaming. That's how to activate eSIM on any compatible, unlocked phone.

Can I add eSIM before I travel?

Yes, and it's the better way: knowing how to set up eSIM at home means you can activate eSIM data the moment you land. Install it over Wi-Fi a day or two before departure and keep the line off until you arrive. The plan details show when the validity period starts, so check them before installing early.

How to add eSIM to a second phone?

An eSIM profile works on one phone at a time, so a second phone, such as a partner's phone or a tablet, needs its own eSIM plan. The steps for how to add eSIM to that device are the same as above. If you're replacing your phone rather than adding one, read our guide on moving your eSIM when you change phones before you reset the old one.

Does eSIM work with my physical SIM at the same time?

Yes. Most eSIM phones keep two lines active at once, so your physical SIM stays on for calls and texts while the travel eSIM handles data. LimitSim eSIMs are data-only, with no local number, but WhatsApp and FaceTime calls work over data. Once you know how to activate eSIM, every trip after this one starts with a few taps.
