eSIM for International Travel: Plans, Prices and How It Works
· 12 min read · LimitSİM Team
An eSIM for international travel gives your phone mobile data abroad without a plastic SIM card and without your carrier's roaming charges. You buy a plan online, install it before you leave and switch it on when you land, while your own number stays on the phone.
This guide covers how international eSIM plans work, when a country, regional or global plan is the right pick, how much data to buy and what plans really cost, using prices checked on 7 October 2026. If the technology is new to you, start with what an eSIM is and how it works.

How Does an eSIM for International Travel Work?
An eSIM for international travel is a prepaid, data-only plan that you download to your phone as a digital profile. It connects to local mobile networks at your destination, so you pay one fixed price upfront for a set amount of data and validity, not roaming fees.
In practice, setting up an eSIM for international travel takes five steps:
- Choose a plan for your destination: one country, a region such as Europe, or a global plan that spans several continents.
- Pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Prices are in euros, and your bank converts the amount to your currency.
- Receive the eSIM by email and in your LimitSim account and app. You get a QR code plus a manual SM-DP+ address and activation code, in case scanning doesn't work.
- Install it once, on the phone you travel with, over Wi-Fi, before the trip. Don't delete it afterwards, because some eSIMs can't be installed a second time.
- Switch it on when you arrive: turn on the eSIM line and its data roaming, and your phone connects to a local network.
Because every LimitSim eSIM for international travel is data-only, it has no local phone number and no calls or SMS. Your home SIM keeps working next to it, so your number stays reachable, and you can still call over data with WhatsApp or FaceTime. That's the core of eSIM travel: data from the travel eSIM, calls and texts from your own line.
One thing to check first: your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. Most recent flagship phones do, but the exact model and the country where it was sold matter, so look for an "Add eSIM" option in your phone's settings before you buy an international eSIM.
Global eSIM vs. Regional and Country eSIM Plans
International eSIM plans come in three coverage types, and the type you choose has a bigger effect on the price than almost anything else. So the first decision for an eSIM for international travel is simple: how many countries, and how many regions, are on your route?
- Country plans cover a single destination, such as the United States or the United Kingdom. For a one-country trip they usually cost less per GB than a regional or global plan.
- Regional plans cover a group of neighboring countries with one eSIM, which suits multi-country routes. The LimitSim Europe plan covers 33 countries, and the Balkans eSIM plan covers 11. Our guide to eSIMs for multi-country trips in Europe goes into regional plans in more detail.
- A global eSIM covers several continents at once. LimitSim Global works in 118 areas, which makes it a fit for round-the-world trips, business travel across regions, or long layovers on the way to somewhere else. Per GB, it usually costs more than other international eSIM plans, so it pays off only when your route truly crosses regions.
A simple rule: one country means a country plan, several countries in one region mean a regional plan, and a route across regions calls for a worldwide eSIM such as LimitSim Global.
Which Countries Have eSIM Coverage?
LimitSim sells country plans for destinations on every inhabited continent, plus regional plans such as Europe (33 countries), Balkans (11 countries), Middle East (10 countries) and Gulf Region (6 areas), and the Global plan for 118 areas. Each destination page lists the networks its plans use. For example:
- United States plans connect to AT&T, Verizon or T-Mobile, depending on the plan.
- United Kingdom plans connect to EE, O2 or Three, depending on the plan.
- Italy plans connect to TIM, Vodafone, Wind or Iliad, depending on the plan.
Each plan lists its networks on the plans page. Coverage inside a country depends on those local networks, so look at the network list if your trip includes remote areas. For regional and global plans, the plan page also shows the full country list. Before you buy an eSIM for international travel that spans several borders, check that every stop on your route is on that list, especially if you mix EU and non-EU countries.
How to Use eSIM Abroad Without Roaming Charges
The point of an eSIM for international travel is to keep your home carrier's data roaming switched off for the whole trip. Here is how to use eSIM data abroad, step by step:
- Check your phone before the trip: it must support eSIM and be unlocked.
- Buy and install the eSIM over Wi-Fi before you fly. Our step-by-step guide on how to activate eSIM covers iPhone and Android, including QR code and manual setup.
- Label both lines, for example "Home" and "Travel", so you can tell them apart in settings.
- Turn on the travel eSIM when you land and switch on data roaming for that line. The eSIM needs it to connect, and it uses your prepaid plan, not your home carrier's tariff.
- Set the travel eSIM as your mobile data line and turn off data roaming on your home SIM. This is the step that stops your carrier from charging for data.
- Keep your home line on for calls and texts if you need them, or switch it off. Your carrier's roaming rates apply to calls and texts on your own number.
If your data runs low, most plans can be topped up in the LimitSim app or on the website when you're signed in, so you keep the same international eSIM instead of installing a new one. For a closer look at costs and convenience on both sides, read our eSIM vs roaming comparison.
International eSIM Plans and Prices
International eSIM plans are priced by three things: coverage, data and validity. A single-country plan usually costs the least per GB, a regional plan often sits in the middle, and a global plan costs the most, because one eSIM has to work on networks across several continents.
Here is what the same 10 GB / 30-day allowance cost across LimitSim's international eSIM plans, next to the smallest plan for each destination:
| Plan | Coverage | 10 GB / 30 days | Plans from |
|---|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | 1 country | €7.63 | €0.54 |
| United States | 1 country | €10.77 | €0.54 |
| Europe | 33 countries | €9.84 | €0.82 |
| Balkans | 11 countries | €13.86 | €1.14 |
| Global | 118 areas | €60.62 | €7.93 |

The difference is large: for a 10 GB month, the Global plan cost about six times as much as the Europe plan. For most trips, the right eSIM for international travel is the narrowest plan that still covers your whole route. A global eSIM makes sense when one plan really has to work across regions, for example Europe and Asia on the same trip. For short hops, the Global plan also has small sizes, such as 1 GB for 7 days at €8.20 or 1 GB with 365 days' validity at €12.48, which works as a backup for layovers.
Many international eSIM plans also come in unlimited versions, for example Europe for 7 days at €17.64. Unlimited plans have a fair-usage policy: after a daily or total amount, the speed is reduced in steps, and each plan shows its exact terms. When you compare eSIM travel plans, look at the price per GB for your trip length rather than the lowest headline price, and check when validity starts in the plan details.
How Much Data Do You Need for Your Trip?
The right data allowance for an eSIM for international travel depends on two things: how long you stay and what you do on the go. Maps, messaging, email and ride-hailing apps use relatively little data, while video streaming, video calls and photo uploads use far more.
Use this table as a starting point:
| Trip | How you use data | Plan size to start with |
|---|---|---|
| Weekend or short city break | Maps, messaging, email | 1–3 GB |
| One to two weeks | Plus social media, photos and music | 5–10 GB |
| Three weeks to a month | Plus video, video calls or remote work | 20 GB or more, or an unlimited plan |
Two simple eSIM travel habits make a small plan last longer: download offline maps and playlists on Wi-Fi before you go, and turn off automatic photo backups and app updates over mobile data. If you're between two sizes, compare the price per GB of international eSIM plans, because the larger size often costs less per GB, and you can still top up most plans if you run low. Our guide to how many GB you need goes into more detail.
Worldwide eSIM Price Comparison
Worldwide eSIM prices only mean something when you compare like for like. To compare international eSIM plans fairly, on 7 October 2026 we checked LimitSim against Airalo for plans with the same data, the same validity and the same currency (EUR), data-only on both sides, at list prices before any discount codes.
| Plan (data / validity) | LimitSim | Airalo | LimitSim vs Airalo | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Global, 1 GB / 7 days | €8.20 | €8.00 | 2.5% higher | Buy |
| Global, 3 GB / 30 days | €20.33 | €22.00 | 7.6% lower | Buy |
| Europe, 3 GB / 7 days | €3.46 | €10.50 | 67.0% lower | |
| Europe, 5 GB / 15 days | €5.48 | €17.50 | 68.7% lower | |
| Europe, 10 GB / 30 days | €9.84 | €28.50 | 65.5% lower | Buy |
| Europe, 20 GB / 30 days | €17.38 | €44.00 | 60.5% lower | Buy |
Products compared: LimitSim Global (118 areas) with Airalo Discover (Global), and LimitSim Europe (33 countries) with Airalo Eurolink. Prices checked on 7 October 2026 on limitsim.com and airalo.com.
What the table shows, and what it doesn't:
- On Global 1 GB / 7 days, Airalo was 20 cents lower. On Global 3 GB / 30 days, LimitSim was 7.6% lower.
- On each Europe plan in the table, LimitSim was between 60.5% and 68.7% lower.
- Coverage isn't identical. Airalo Discover lists 168 countries and LimitSim Global 118 areas. Airalo Eurolink lists 41 countries and LimitSim Europe 33. Both include the UK and Switzerland, but Eurolink also covers countries that LimitSim Europe doesn't, such as Turkey, Georgia and Ukraine. Check your route against each plan's country list.
- The same number of days doesn't mean the same activation rules. Each provider sets its own, so read the plan details.
- Unlimited plans are left out because the fair-usage terms differ, so they aren't a like-for-like match. Prices change, and current prices are on each plan page.
International eSIM FAQ
In short, an eSIM for international travel replaces roaming with a prepaid local data plan. Pick a country plan for one destination, a regional plan for neighboring countries or a global plan across continents; install it over Wi-Fi before you fly and switch it on when you land.
Is an international eSIM cheaper than roaming?
Often, but it depends on your carrier and your trip. Roaming usually means a daily fee or charges per MB, while an international eSIM has a fixed price you see before you buy, such as €9.84 for 10 GB over 30 days on the Europe plan on 7 October 2026. Compare that with your carrier's roaming price for the same trip length.
Can I keep my phone number?
Yes. An eSIM for international travel is added next to your physical SIM or existing eSIM, so your number stays on your phone and can still receive calls and texts. Use the travel eSIM for data and keep data roaming off on your home line; your carrier's rates apply to calls and texts on your own number.
Does a global eSIM include calls?
No. Every LimitSim international eSIM, including the Global plan, is data-only, so there is no local number and no calls or SMS. You can still call and message over mobile data with apps such as WhatsApp or FaceTime.
Can I top up an international eSIM?
Yes, most plans can be topped up in the LimitSim app or on the website when you're signed in. You keep the same eSIM on your phone, so there's nothing new to install.
What countries have eSIM support?
LimitSim sells country plans for destinations on every inhabited continent, regional plans such as Europe (33 countries) and Balkans (11 countries), and a worldwide eSIM, the Global plan, covering 118 areas. Search your destination on the plans page to see its plans and networks. Your phone needs eSIM support too, so check its settings for an "Add eSIM" option before you choose an eSIM for international travel.
