Which eSIM for Saudi Arabia Suits Your Trip?

The right eSIM for Saudi Arabia depends on trip length, route and data needs: a city or business trip usually needs only a country plan with a few gigabytes, Umrah and Hajj call for more data and longer validity, and a Gulf tour often suits a regional plan.

  • City and business trips: for a few days in Riyadh or Jeddah with maps, ride-hailing apps and messengers, 1 to 3 GB is usually enough; if you work on the go, plan for 10 GB.
  • Umrah and Hajj: pilgrims need a connection from arrival and enough data for video calls home. Our Umrah and Hajj eSIM guide covers the Nusuk permit, data needs and the process on the ground; the Ramadan 2027 Umrah guide has dates and deadlines.
  • Gulf tour: with Doha or Dubai on the route, one regional eSIM covers several countries (see below).

We compared euro list prices for LimitSim's eSIM for Saudi Arabia and Airalo's Saudi Arabia eSIM ("Red Sand") with the same data and validity: data-only plans on both sides, no discount codes.

Not included: unlimited plans, whose fair-usage rules differ, and Airalo packs without a LimitSim plan of the same data and validity, such as 1 GB for 3 days. Same validity doesn't mean the same activation rule either; check each side's plan terms.

Coverage in Riyadh, Jeddah, Mecca and Medina

An eSIM for Saudi Arabia runs on Saudi mobile networks: Saudi Arabia plans connect to STC or Mobily, depending on the plan, and each plan lists its networks on the plans page. How well the internet in Saudi Arabia works at a given spot depends on that network, the buildings and how busy it is; no one can promise it everywhere. Two tips:

  • Expect peak times: around the Holy Mosques in Mecca and Medina, such as on the last nights of Ramadan or during Hajj, huge crowds are online at once. Any network can slow down then, with a local SIM card or an eSIM; text messages often still get through when video calls stall.
  • Download offline maps: save maps of Riyadh, Jeddah, Mecca and Medina over Wi-Fi in advance, also for long drives between cities.

eSIM or Local SIM Card in Saudi Arabia?

A local SIM card in Saudi Arabia, bought in the country from a network operator, comes with a Saudi number. The regulator, today the CST (then the CITC), instructed operators to verify mobile customers by fingerprint from 21 January 2016 (CST notice of 14 April 2016). According to a CST notice of 21 May 2025, international pilgrims can also get an eSIM from Saudi operators, applied for through an app and activated after biometric verification via Absher.

A LimitSim travel eSIM, by contrast, is bought online before you leave and gives you data only, with no Saudi number; your own SIM stays in for calls and texts at your carrier's rates. A local SIM card mainly makes sense if you need a Saudi number or are staying longer. For a city break, Umrah or a business trip, an eSIM for Saudi Arabia is practical because it's ready on your phone before take-off.

How to Set Up Your eSIM for Saudi Arabia

Set up your eSIM for Saudi Arabia at home: after purchase, the QR code, SM-DP+ address and activation code arrive by email, in your LimitSim account and in the app; install the profile once over Wi-Fi on your travel phone and switch it on after landing.

  1. Check your phone: it must support eSIM and not be carrier-locked.
  2. Buy a plan: by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Prices are in euros; if your card uses another currency, your bank converts.
  3. Install the eSIM: scan the QR code or enter the SM-DP+ address and activation code by hand.
  4. Keep the profile: don't delete the eSIM; some eSIMs can't be installed twice.

Every step for iPhone and Android, plus help with errors, is in our guide on how to activate eSIM.

Activate Before You Fly or After Landing?

Ideally both, in two steps: install the eSIM before you leave, while you have Wi-Fi, and switch the line on only after landing. That leaves time to fix a QR code that doesn't work at once. The plan details say when validity starts. After landing:

  1. Turn on the eSIM line and enable data roaming for it.
  2. Choose the eSIM as your line for mobile data.
  3. Turn off data roaming on your home SIM so your carrier doesn't charge you for data.

Visiting More Gulf Countries: eSIM for Qatar and the UAE

The eSIM for Saudi Arabia works only in Saudi Arabia. For Doha, Dubai or Abu Dhabi, you either take a plan per country, such as an eSIM for Qatar, or one regional plan for all stops:

Prices on limitsim.com on 7 October 2026; current prices are on the plans pages.

The Middle East plan works in 10 countries: in the Gulf, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman, plus Jordan, Egypt, Morocco and Turkey. The Gulf Region plan covers Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait and Iraq, so it's mainly worth it if Iraq is on your route. For Riyadh, Doha and Dubai on one trip, the Middle East plan is the simple choice: 10 GB for 30 days costs €22.00, against €20.46 on the Saudi-only plan.

If you're staying longer in Doha, an extra eSIM for Qatar can cost less. Qatar plans connect to Ooredoo or Vodafone, depending on the plan, and UAE plans to Du or Etisalat UAE. To choose between country, regional and global plans, see our guide to the eSIM for international travel.

eSIM Saudi Arabia FAQ

In short: on 7 October 2026, LimitSim's eSIM for Saudi Arabia cost from €1.68, gives you mobile data only and connects to STC or Mobily depending on the plan; you install it over Wi-Fi before you leave, switch it on after landing and keep your own number.

Does WhatsApp work with an eSIM in Saudi Arabia?

For chats, yes: WhatsApp messages, photos and voice notes go over the eSIM's data connection. WhatsApp calls are a special case in Saudi Arabia; our guide to WhatsApp calls in Saudi Arabia explains what applies there and which apps to use instead.

Is an eSIM enough for Umrah?

Yes, if the plan matches your data needs. For one to two weeks of messages, maps and photos, 3 to 5 GB is usually enough, such as 5 GB for 15 days at €11.38; for daily video calls, 10 GB for 30 days at €20.46 is the better fit (prices from 7 October 2026). If data runs low, most plans can be topped up in the app or on the website after signing in.

Do I get a Saudi phone number?

No. The eSIM for Saudi Arabia is a data-only eSIM: no local number, no calls, no texts. Your own number stays reachable, at your carrier's rates for calls and texts. If you need a Saudi number there, get a local SIM card.
